St. Martin’s Blessing of the Animals

IMG_0692 IMG_0615 IMG_0696 Every year just as the leaves begin to turn, churches around the country celebrate St. Francis Day with the blessing of animals. About 75 people turned up at the Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in Chestnut Hill to have their dogs, cats, hIMG_0698amsters and yes, hermit crabs, blessed by the rector Jarrett Kerbel and his assistant Callie Swanlund.

Bishop Dwayne Royster leads a citywide organization known as POWER — Philadelphians Organized to Witness Empower and Rebuild — a grassroots coalition of local churches designed to address problems that plague city neighborhoods. At a local organizing rally, he talked with us about courage.
